Today was a reminder of the enormity of the need in Guatemala. We visited an orphanage called Anini that is home to 66 kids with special needs. The TEAM spent one day at this orphanage last year, and felt that more time was needed. So this year we are spending three full days in hopes that we can help these children as much as possible.
Charity and Kelly spent all of their time adjusting wheelchairs. It was a bit frustrating because they wanted to be interacting with the children instead of working on their chairs, but because a lot of the children are older, there are already permanent contractures. So what they could do to their chair would be a more lasting benefit.
Carol got to work with the babies, including two new babies that weren’t there last year. They are not getting any early intervention, so Carol enjoyed showing the nannies some basic things to do that will help with positioning the babies and showing them some play skills.
One of the boys, Rogelio, came to Anini last year at the age of 4 and weighed only 8 pounds. He can’t eat and sit independently, so Carol’s happy moment was when he sat up and played purposefully with one of the toys.
We head back to Anini the next two days. We can play a small part, but we really pray that the Lord would multiply our efforts and bring more assistance to this orphanage throughout the year. We hope to be a continuation of hope and love to each and every child.
