What a blessing it was to once again travel as part of TEAMworks! Our
October trip was so, so wonderful! We spent time at our ‘home base’
orphanage and had the opportunity to spend more time than ever meeting
with local parents and their children with special needs.
My husband and I prayed for weeks before the trip. We prayed for all
the children we would meet, for their families, for the TEAMworks team
of therapists, and we prayed specifically this year that we would have
opportunities to share God’s love.
On our October trip TEAMworks met with local families and their
children, a mom came forward with her son. He was shy and she was
determined. Our group of therapists, a speech and language
pathologist, a physical therapist, and myself (an occupational
therapist) listened to the mom tell us her concerns for her son’s
development. Using a translator, we talked, made suggestions,
demonstrated therapy techniques, gave the them handouts, and then gave
them equipment. When we were wrapping up our meeting, the mom
hesitated and then said, “My son has problems at school. Because he
walks differently, he feels separated from the other children. He has
problems with his self-worth, because of his disability.” Her son,
listening in, turned slightly away from us to hide his embarrassment.
Can I tell you my heart swelled with love for this family and with
thankfulness that God presented this opportunity to share about His
love?
Immediately, Psalms ch. 139 verses 13 and 14 came to my mind.
“For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.”
I turned to the boy, and what a privilege it was to tell him that he
is a child of God. That God knit him together in his mother’s womb.
That he is fearfully and wonderfully made. That his identity and
value are in Christ. The little boy smiled shyly and his mom began to cry. She fingered the cross on her necklace and thanked us for the encouragement.
I thank God for the opportunity to serve through TEAMworks. I am also
thankful to all the TEAMworks supporters who make these trips
possible. It’s a beautiful thing to be able to share hope.
